About

“The Breath of Temperature” is a painting series that visualizes the subtle vibrations arising at the boundary where cold and warm air meet. Each work abstracts these encounters into visual form, expressing invisible sensations through layers of oil paint. The exhibition consists of sixteen works created on canvases of various sizes, using oil as the main medium combined with multiple materials.


“온도의 숨결”은 차가움과 따뜻함이 맞닿는 경계에서 일어나는 미묘한 진동을 추상으로 포착해낸 회화시리즈이다. 다양한 크기의 캔버스에 유화를 기반으로 여러 재료를 사용하여 완성한 16점의 작품으로 구성하였다. 미국 샌프란시스코에서 공부한 후, 그곳에서 두 번의 개인전을 가진 바 있으며 우리나라에서는 첫 번째로 이희 작업의 소개한다


Artist Statement 

I am interested in phenomena that are invisible to the eye but clearly exist. Different temperatures cannot be seen, yet they can be felt through our senses. When those temperatures meet, a physical reaction occurs, and we can visually perceive it. Frost, fog, rain, and snow appear when cold and warm air collide. I find these natural occurrences similar to the invisible moments when minds or emotions meet. The traces of those moments are not merely physical condensation, but emotional crystallizations formed at the boundary where the inner temperature encounters the outer world. I explore the vibrations created by invisible temperatures colliding - translating those emotional resonances into abstraction.


The layers of texture, translucent films, and hazy surfaces on my canvas are residues of emotions that have condensed, disappeared, and left behind their traces. The overlapping and intersecting colors form ripples on the canvas - like the waves created when emotions meet. These lines sometimes appear cold and sharp, other times soft and warm, revealing unseen layers of inner sentiment.


Through my work, I hope the invisible phenomena coexisting within the paintings may evoke more than a simple visual impression - inviting deeper emotional resonance within the viewer.


나는 눈에 보이지 않지만 분명히 존재하는 현상에 대해 관심이 있다. 우리는 서로 다른 온도를 눈으로 볼 수 없지만 감각으로 느낄 수 있고, 심지어 그 온도가 만나는 순간에는 물리적 현상이 일어나 시각적으로 볼 수 있다. 차가움과 따뜻함이 맞닿는 순간, 보이지 않던 성에나 안개가 생기기도 하고 비나 눈이 오는 현상들이 나타나는데, 나는 이러한 현상들이 마치 눈에 보이지 않는 마음과 마음이 만나는 순간, 감정과 감정이 만나는 순간과 닮아 있다고 생각했다. 그 순간의 흔적들은 단순한 물리적 결로가 아니라 내면의 온도가 바깥세계와 만나는 지점에서 잠시 드러나는 감정의 결정(Crystallization)으로 느껴졌다. 나는 이것을 보이지 않던 온도가 부딪치며 만들어내는 진동의 순간을 감정적 차원에서 탐구함으로써 추상으로 풀어냈다.


화면 위에 쌓인 질감과 투명한 막, 흐릿한 결들은 감정이 응결되고 사라지며 남아있는 자국이기도 하고, 겹겹이 쌓이고 마주치는 색채는 감정과 감정이 맞닿을 때의 파동처럼 화면 위에 결을 새긴다. 그 결은 때로는 차갑고 날카롭게, 때로는 부드럽고 따뜻하게 번지며 보이지 않던 내면의 층위를 드러낸다.


내 작업은 보이지 않는 것과 보이는 현상들이 그림 안에 공존하기에 단순한 시각적 유희를 넘어 더 깊은 내면의 울림이 있기를 바란다
