Along the river

About

Sculptor Yang Hwasun, based in Maseok, Gyeonggi Province, has been captivated by the materiality of clay since 2021, immersing herself in ceramic sculpture work. Despite being well past her seventieth year, she has moved beyond her previous bronze work to newly engage with clay, becoming deeply involved even in the firing process.

The Bukhan River near the artist's studio serves as a place of rest and solace for her. As the artist says, whenever she wants to see water, she goes to the nearby Bukhan River. The flowing water and the willow trees there seem to offer advice about the lightness of life. The willow trees by the riverside simply sway according to the wind's rhythm. While sturdy tree branches break in the wind, the soft and flexible willow branches maintain themselves by simply yielding their strength to the wind.

The willow trees along the Bukhan River have become new subject matter for the artist's work. This exhibition will feature about 16 new works, including < River at 3 O'Clock in the Afternoon > observed during the artist's walks, < River >, and < Wind Blowing on Willow Trees >.

This is the fifteenth solo exhibition by Yang Wha-seon, who graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Hongik University.

 

경기도 마석에서 자리를 잡고 있는 조각가 양화선은 2021년이후 줄곧 흙이라는 물성에 매료되어 도자조각 작업에 몰두하고 있다. 고희古稀도 훌쩍 넘긴 나이에도 불구하고 이전에 브론즈 작업에서 나아가서 새롭게 흙을 가지고 작업하고 소성에까지 몰입하고 있다.

작가 작업실 근교에 있는 북한강은 작가에게 있어서 휴식과 위로의 장소이기도 하다. 물이 보고 싶을 때면 가까운 북한강을 나간다는 작가의 이야기처럼 물가에 가서 흘러가는 물과 그곳에 있는 버드나무는 삶의 가벼움에 대해서 조언을 해주는 듯하다. 강가의 버드나무는 바람결에 따라서 바람결 대로 나부낄 따름이다. 억센 나무가지는 바람에 꺾이지만 부드러운 낭창낭창한 버드나무가지는 그저 바람에 힘을 맡겨서 그 몸을 유지하고 있다.

북한강을 따라서 있는 버드나무는 작가에게 새로운 작업의 소재가 되고 있다. 이번 전시에는 작가의 산책 시간에 바라다본 < 오후 3시의 강>을 비롯하여 <강>,  <버드나무에 부는 바람>등 신작 16여점이 출품될 예정이다.

홍익대학교 조소과를 졸업한 양화선 작가의 열 다섯 번째 개인전이다.

Artist Statement 

<Willow Trees and Bukhan River> 

Trees of the forest, you know my soul.

I live between Cheongpyeong and Dumulmori in the lower reaches of the Bukhan River. The East Sea is far away, so when I want to see water, I go to the Bukhan River. Along the riverbank stand rows of willow trees like a folding screen, their long, slender branches dipping into the water, rippling and swaying. In May, leaves like grandmother's permed hair loosen and droop, dipping their heads into the river water. The branches and leaves of the willow trees surrender their bodies to the wind that blows vigorously, filled with anxiety and passion. It seems as if they cannot suppress the outburst of vitality, intoxicated by spring.

The willow tree is a tree of strong reproduction and survival, a tree of wind and rain. When the wind blows fiercely, the willow tree exudes the ecstasy of survival and life with its entire body. It is like a magnificent epic poem. I look closely at the riverside willow trees, walk around them, sit under the trees to feel the wind, or dip my feet in the water surface where leaves hang down.


Bukhan River
Origin: Danbal Pass, Sineup-ri, Geumgang-gun, Gangwon Province
Length: 317.5 km
Flows through Jungdo, Namiseom, Jaraseom, Chuncheon, and Gapyeong, then meets the Namhan River at Dumulmori in Yangsu-ri and flows into the Han River.


<버드나무와 북한강>

숲의 나무여, 너는 내 영혼을 아는구나.

나는 북한강 하류 청평과 두물머리 사이에 산다. 동해는 멀어서 물이 보고 싶을 때는 북한강으로 간다. 강가에는 길고 가는 가지를 물에 담그고 일렁이며 흔들리는 버드나무가 병풍처럼 열을 지어 서 있다. 오월이 되면 할머니의 파마머리 같은 잎들은 풀어지고 늘어져서 강물에 머리를 적신다. 버드나무의 가지와 잎들은 불안함과 열정이 가득 차 힘차게 불어오는 바람에 몸을 맡긴다. 봄에 흠뻑 취해 생명력의 분출을 억누를 수 없는 듯 하다.

버드나무는 강인한 번식과 생존의 나무, 바람과 비의 나무이다. 바람이 극렬하게 불 때 버드나무는 온몸으로 생존과 생명의 희열을 내뿜는다. 마치 장엄한 한편의 서사시와 같다. 나는 강가 버드나무를 가까이 바라보고 그 주변을 걷기도 하고 나무 아래 앉아 바람을 느끼거나 잎이 늘어진 수면에 발을 담근다.

중도, 남이섬, 자라섬, 춘천, 가평을 거쳐 양수리 두물머리에서 남한강과 만나 한강으로 흘러간다,
