About

Sculptor Eunhyun Kim is holding her ninth solo exhibition at Gallery Dam, titled “Sculptor’s Drawings.” In the meantime, the artist has been working on drawing in the croquis class at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and this exhibition presents the results of that work. This is the first time the artist is showcasing both drawings and sculptures together in a single exhibition.

Figure drawing and croquis are foundational processes for sculptural work. The artist captures the sense of volume, vitality, and the forms and rhythms revealed through the movement of three-dimensional subjects, translating them onto the two-dimensional canvas. The bold yet agile lines and the heavy yet dynamic touches expressed by the sculptor’s hand, though temporarily confined to the flat surface, evoke the sense that they might one day leap out and come alive again in three-dimensional form. This is why Kim Eunhyun’s drawings exude such vitality and dynamic energy. Experiencing the works expressed in drawing alongside their sculptural counterparts allows viewers to feel this even more strongly.

The richness and diversity of this exhibition stem from the variety of models of different races, the dynamically depicted poses, and the artist’s vivid touch that captures them so expressively.

The sculptures displayed alongside the drawings in this exhibition are somewhat different from previous works. While past exhibitions often featured works expressing a serene and noble world of meditation, this time, many pieces portray obsessions or fears hidden deep within the human psyche. Some works also show new technical developments, such as the application of drawing techniques onto three-dimensional clay forms. As always, the artist fully respects the materiality of clay, kneading it with a meditative mind, and at a certain moment, refined forms emerge. Whereas previous works mainly revealed faces from the forms, this time, some pieces express hands and fingernails through natural drawing on the surface. The meeting of three-dimensional clay and two-dimensional drawing techniques can be seen in the “Obsession” series, where the artist’s expression of the human body feels much broader and freer.


조각가 김은현이 갤러리 담에서 <조각가의 드로잉>이라는 제목으로 아홉 번째 개인전을 갖는다. 작가는 그 사이 파리의 그랑 쇼미에르 아카데미의 크로키 반에서 드로잉 작업을 해왔으며, 이번 전시는 그 결과물들을 선보이는 자리이다. 작가가 드로잉과 조각 작품을 동시에 선보이는 것은 이번 전시가 처음이다.

인체 드로잉, 크로키는 조각 작업에 바탕이 되는 과정이다. 입체적 대상물이 뿜어내는 양감, 생명력, 동작을 통해 드러나는 형태감과 리듬을 포착하여 평면의 화폭에 담는다. 조각가의 손에 의해 표현된 굵직하면서도 날렵한 선들, 묵직하면서도 생동감 넘치는 터치들은 지금은 잠시 평면의 화폭에 갇혀있지만 언젠가는 평면 밖으로 튀어나와 다시 입체의 형태로 되살아날 것 같은 느낌을 준다. 김은현의 드로잉 작품들이 생명력과 강한 역동성을 보여주는 것은 이 때문이다. 드로잉으로 표현되었던 작품과 그것을 입체적인 조형물로 되살린 작품을 동시에 감상하면 그것을 더 잘 느낄 수 있다. 이번 김은현 조각가의 드로잉전이 매우 풍성하면서도 다채로운 느낌을 주는 것은 여러 인종의 다양한 모델, 역동적으로 표현된 다채로운 동작들, 그것을 생동적으로 포착한 작가의 손맛이 어우러졌기 때문이라 생각한다.

이번에 드로잉과 같이 전시되는 조각품들은 기존의 작품들과는 조금 다르다. 기존의 전시에서는 단아하면서도 고아한 명상의 세계를 표현한 작품들을 많이 선보인 데 비해 이번 전시에서는 인간 내면 깊은 곳에 감추어져 있는 집착이나 두려움을 표현한 작품들이 많다. 기법 면에서 새로운 변화를 보여주는 작품들도 있다. 입체적인 점토 덩어리 위에 평면적인 드로잉 기법을 활용한 것이 바로 그것이다. 작가는 늘 그래왔듯이 흙이라는 재료의 물성을 최대한 존중하면서 무심으로 꼬막밀기를 하다 어느 순간에 정제된 형태를 뽑아낸다. 이전의 작품들은 주로 그 형태에서 얼굴을 뽑아내는 것이었다면 이번에는 그 위에 자연스러운 드로잉을 통해 손과 손톱을 표현한 작품들도 선보이고 있다. 입체적인 흙덩이와 평면의 드로잉 기법의 만남은 <집착> 시리즈 작품들에서 감상할 수 있다. 작가의 인체 표현 영역이 훨씬 확장되고 자유로워졌음을 느낄 수 있다.

For me, who realizes the three-dimensional forms of objects,
drawing is the most fundamental groundwork.

Rhythm, flow, volume, vitality...
The lines of the human body melt into the clay.
Seeking to approach the freedom of nature and life itself,
today again I knead the clay, and forms emerge in their purest state.
It is a journey of approaching myself.
