Gallery Dam presents the twenty-ninth solo exhibition highlighting the new artistic world of artist Toshimatsu Kuremoto. This exhibition focuses on Kuremoto's bold symbiosis between painting and sculpture.

The artist observes people he meets in daily life and transforms the impressions he receives from them into three-dimensional or two-dimensional works. In the piece titled "She Working at Starbucks," which expresses the vibrant appearance of a young woman he encountered at Starbucks, he portrays a lively and elegant figure.

Kuremoto moves beyond two-dimensional paintings to present three-dimensional sculptural works. However, his sculptures still maintain strong painterly elements. The artist has previously created pedestals for his three-dimensional works by hammering and cutting sheet metal on wood, but in recent works, he sometimes uses parts of old H-beams or V-Brokes used as construction materials. Occasionally, he grinds and finishes old ship screws (propellers) to serve as bases for human sculptures. "The process of cutting and hammering sheet metal feels like composing surfaces in painting," says the artist. A notable feature of this exhibition is the introduction of the same techniques used in sculpture within his paintings.

The artist refers to his three-dimensional sculptural works as "three-dimensional pictures." While breaking away from flatness and utilizing space, he still works with a sense of painting. After coloring canvas with oil or acrylic paint, he employs partial sculpture techniques—cutting sheet metal pieces for collage—and then applies acrylic coloring over them.

Kuremoto mentions that while exhibiting his sculptural works, audience reactions are more immediate and varied compared to his painting exhibitions, giving him a new pleasure in his artistic activities.

Kuremoto states, "The first attempt is difficult, but the second is not so challenging," showing his will to continue taking on new challenges. This exhibition will be a valuable opportunity to experience Kuremoto's unique artistic world that traverses the boundaries between painting and sculpture.

It will be an opportunity to appreciate the mature and beautiful sculptures and paintings of this artist in his seventies all in one place.

갤러리담에서는 토시마츠 구레모토 작가의 새로운 작품 세계를 조명하는 스물 아홉 번째 개인전이 열린다. 이번 전시는 구레모토의 회화와 조각으로의 과감한 공생을 집중 조명합니다.

작가는 일상에서 만나는 사람들을 관찰하고 그들에게서 받는 인상들을 입체작업 혹은 평면 작업으로 작업한다. 스타벅스에서 만난 젊은 여성의 활기찬 모습을 보면서 표현한  <스타벅스에서 일하고 있는 그녀> 라는 작품에서도 활기차고 기품있는 모습을 보여주고 있다.

구레모토는 평면 회화에서 벗어나 3차원의 조각 작품을 선보입니다. 그러나 그의 조각은 여전히 강한 회화적 요소를 지니고 있습니다. 작가는 입체 작품의 받침을 나무 위에 함석을 조각내서 망치질하는 작업을 해왔으나 최근 작업에서는 오래된 H빔의 일부, 혹은 건축자재로 쓰이는 V-Broke를 사용하기도 한다. 때로는 오래된 배에서 나온 스쿠류(선박용 프로펠러)를 갈고 마감해서 사람 조각의 받침으로 작업하였다. "함석을 조각내고 망치질하는 작업이 회화의 면을 구성해나가는 것처럼 느껴진다"고 작가는 말하는데 이번 전시에서는 회화 안에 조각에서 썼던 같은 방식이 도입되는 것이 특이 사항이다. 

작가는 자신의 입체 조각 작품들을 "입체적인 그림"이라고 말힌다. 평면성을 벗어나 공간을 활용하면서도, 여전히 그림을 그리는 듯한 감각으로 작업하고 있다. 캔버스에 유화나 아크릴으로 채색한 후에 입체 작업 방식의 일부- 함석 조각을 잘라서 콜라주를 하는- 방식을 쓴다. 그 위에 아크릴을 채색하는 방식을 쓰고 있다.

구레모토는 입체작업 전시를 하면서 회화 전시 때보다 관객들의 반응이 즉각적이고 다양해져, 작품 활동의 새로운 즐거움을 느끼고 있다고 한다.

구레모토는 "한 번이 어렵지 두 번은 그리 어렵지 않다"며 계속해서 새로운 도전을 이어갈 의지를 보입니다. 이번 전시는 회화와 조각의 경계를 넘나드는 구레모토의 독특한 예술 세계를 경험할 수 있는 귀중한 기회가 될 것이다.

칠 십대 작가의 원숙한 아름다운 조각과 회화를 한 자리에서 감상할 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있다.
