Gallery Dam presents an exhibition by artist Kim Hee-jung, who portrays the stars in the summer night sky. The stars and the Milky Way that the artist saw in the countryside night sky during her childhood have become important motifs in her work.

The artist creates most of her works meticulously and delicately on paper using pens and markers. Buddhist mandala iconography is also an important motif in her work.

In the words of Director Gil Brazil: "Kim Hee-jung's drawings allow us to glimpse both her inner world and the vastness of the universe simultaneously. Whether in large-scale drawings or small mandalas, she presents viewers with a lexicon of personal and cultural symbols that combine surreal imagery, dream symbols, sacred geometry, and Buddhist iconography."

"This visual encyclopedia of knowledge is a physical expression of the artist's exploration of meaning and reflection on metaphysical and spiritual thinking. The artist's works are created through arduous and repetitive processes, which reinforces the themes of her work through this impressive meditation. Her rich use of paint and delicate line work are skillfully expressed, offering viewers a brilliant and transcendent space to contemplate, indulge, and appreciate."

As suggested by the exhibition title, various everyday tools—bowls, flags, eyes, noses, mouths, sand, rivers—form constellations, which inspired the title of this exhibition.

Kim Hee-jung graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Duksung Women's University and its graduate school before moving to the United States, where she studied at the State University of New York and the School of the Art Institute of Illinois. She currently resides in New York, where she is actively working.

This exhibition marks her third introduction in Korea.

갤러리담에서는 여름 한가운데 밤하늘의 별을 그리고 있는 김희정 작가의 전시를 기획하였다.  작가가 어릴 적 시골의 밤하늘에서 본 별과 은하수는 작가 작업에 중요한 소재가 되고 있다. 

작가는 대부분의 작업은 종이 위에 펜과 마카펜등을 이용해서 섬세하고 꼼꼼하게 그려나간다. 

불교의 만다라 도상도 중요한 모티브이기도 하다.

김희정작가의 드로잉은 내면의 세계와 우주의 광활함을 동시에 엿볼 수 있게 해준다. 대형 드로잉이든 작은 만다라이든, 그녀는 초현실적인 이미지, 꿈의 상징, 신성한 기하학, 불교 도상학을 결합한 개인적, 문화적 상징의 어휘집대성을 관객에게 보여준다. 

이러한 지식의 시각적 전서는 형이상학적이고 영적인 사고에 대한 의미와 성찰에 대한 예술가의 탐구를 물리적으로 표현한 것이다. 작가의 작품은 힘들고 반복적인 과정을 거쳐 제작되는데, 작품의 주제가 이러한 감동적인 명상을 통해 강화된다. 작가의 풍부한 물감 활용과 섬세한 선 작업은 능숙하게 표현되어, 보는 이로 하여금 사색하고, 탐닉하고, 감상할 수 있는, 찬란하고 초월적인 공간을 보여준다.

이번 전시 제목에서도 시사하듯이 일상의 여러가지 도구들- 그릇, 깃발, 눈, 코, 입, 사, 강- 등의 모양이 별자리를 이루고 있어 이런 제목으로 전시를 하게 되었다.

김희정은 덕성여대 서양화과와 동 대학원을 졸업 후 도미하여 미국 뉴욕주립대학교와 일리노이미술대학에서 공부한 후 지금은 뉴욕에 거주하며 활발한 활동을 하고 있다.

이번 전시는 국내에서는 세 번째로 소개하고 있는 전시이다.

Artist Statement 

My love for stars and the universe began when I was very young. As a child, I went camping with my family in Gapyeong. At that time, it was very rural, and when night fell, a pitch-black darkness descended where nothing could be seen. When I casually looked up at the night sky, there were an enormous number of stars. The night sky was so filled with stars that there was almost no space between them. Seeing this sight for the first time, what I felt in that moment wasn't so much beauty as fear—looking back now, it was a feeling of 'awe.' From that moment until now, half a century later, my love for stars and the universe has continued.

Looking back at the works I've created so far, whether painting in college, creating my first artist books during my studies in America, or even now, my themes have always been either stars or the universe. The universe, as I see it, exists everywhere in the world—in the bowls we use every day, in basins, on the ground, and in the sky. The universe exists in both vast and small places.

Through my work, I create cosmic forms by collecting shapes derived from my most personal experiences. If you look closely at the formalized stars and constellations in my work, you'll see they are composed of recognizable forms such as eyes, noses, mouths, hands, feet, bowls, flags, stairs, and spools of thread. These forms have been developed one by one through sculptures, artist books, installations, and two-dimensional works that I have created over decades. Some are shapes seen in dreams, others obtained through travel, and still others derived from Buddhism as a life philosophy—all culminating together.

I hope that viewers will engage with my work by unwinding each thread, as if searching for hidden pictures or finding constellations in the night sky.

나의 별과 우주에 대한 사랑은 아주 어렸을 때부터 시작되었다. 어렸을 때 가족과 함께 가평으로 캠핑을 간 적이 있다. 그때만 해도 그곳은 아주 시골이어서 밤이 되자 아무것도 보이지않는 캄캄한 어둠이 내려 앉았다. 무심코 밤하늘을 올려다 보았는데, 엄청나게 많은 별이 있었다. 거의 별과 별 사이가 없을 정도로 밤하늘은 별들로 가득 차있었다. 난생 처음 본 광경에, 그 순간 내가 느낀건 아름답다기 보다 무서운 느낌이었는데, 지금 회상해보니 ‘경외’의 감정이었다. 그때부터 반세기가 지난 지금까지 나의 별과 우주에 대한 사랑은 계속 되었다.

지금까지 내가 제작한 작품을 돌아보면, 대학때 그림을 그렸을 때에도, 미국에 유학을 가서 처음 아티스트북을 만들었을 때도, 그리고 지금도, 내 작품의 주제는 별 아니면 우주다. 내가 생각하는 우주는 세상 어디에도 있다. 우리가 매일 쓰는 그릇에도, 대야에도, 땅에도, 그리고 하늘에도. 우주는 거대한 곳에도, 작은 곳에도 존재한다.

나는 작품을 통해, 가장 개인적인 경험으로부터 얻어진 형태들을 모아 우주의 형상을 만들어 낸다. 작품 속에 보여지는 정형화된 별들과 별자리들은 자세히 보면, 눈, 코, 입, 손, 발등의 인체 형상과, 그릇, 깃발, 계단, 실타래 등 우리가 알 수 있는 형상들로 이루어진 것을 알 수 있다. 이 형상들은 내가 수십 년간 제작한 조각이나 아티스트 북, 설치작업, 그리고 평면 작업을 통해 하나 둘씩 형성된 것으로, 몇몇은 꿈에서 본 형상들, 또 몇몇은 여행을 통해 얻어진 것들, 또는 인생철학으로서의 불교에서 얻어진 것들이 집대성 된 것이다. 

나는 관객이 하나하나 실타래를 풀듯, 마치 숨은 그림을 찾는 것처럼, 또는 밤하늘의 별자리를 찾는 것처럼 그 형상들을 찾으며 작품과 소통하기를 소망한다.
