Gallery Dam is pleased to present Mi-ae Kim's solo exhibition "Anywhere" from October 15 to 28.

Kim Mi-ae is an established artist who graduated from Bielefeld University of Fine Arts in Germany in 2011 and has been actively working between Korea and Germany. This exhibition showcases landscape paintings and works themed around nature, based on the artist's personal experiences.

Kim Miae’s paintings are characterized by bold and intense use of color. Her works frequently feature landscapes where natural and artificial elements—trees, mountains, houses, and plants—harmoniously coexist. These landscapes transcend mere representation, functioning as motifs that symbolize the artist's inner world. The pieces in this exhibition particularly employ bright and vibrant contrasts of green, yellow, and blue to express the vitality of nature. This use of color conveys messages of hope and life force. Additionally, her masterful fusion of abstract and figurative elements blurs the boundary between reality and inner consciousness, offering viewers space for diverse interpretations.

The artist's brushwork is sometimes rough and bold, other times delicate and fluid. This varied approach gives her works dynamism and vitality, effectively capturing nature's diverse textures and movements.

As suggested by the exhibition title "Anywhere," Kim Miae's works reveal the process of finding one's roots and establishing identity regardless of location. She explores this theme through various landscapes: sometimes dense forests, sometimes the island of Madeira in Portugal, and sometimes scenes where urban environment and nature coexist.

Through this exhibition, viewers can experience the beauty and vitality of nature through the artist's unique perspective while discovering their own stories within these reinterpreted landscapes.

갤러리 담에서는 오는 10월 15일부터 28일까지 김미애 작가의 개인전 "어디에서든"을 개최합니다.

김미애는 2011년 독일 빌레펠트 조형미술대학 회화과를 졸업한 후 한국과 독일을 오가며 활발한 작품 활동을 펼치고 있는 중견 작가입니다. 이번 전시에서는 작가의 경험을 바탕으로 한 풍경화와 자연을 주제로 한 작품들을 선보입니다.

김미애의 회화는 강렬하고 대담한 색채 사용이 특징적입니다. 그녀의 작품에서는 나무, 산, 집, 식물 등 자연과 인공물이 어우러진 풍경이 자주 등장하며, 이는 단순한 풍경의 재현을 넘어 작가의 내면 세계를 상징하는 모티프로 작용합니다. 특히 이번 전시작들은 녹색, 노란색, 파란색 등 밝고 강렬한 색채를 대비시켜 사용함으로써 생동감 넘치는 자연의 모습을 표현하고 있습니다. 이러한 색채의 사용은 희망과 생명력의 메시지를 전달합니다. 또한 추상적 요소와 구상적 요소를 절묘하게 융합하여 현실과 내면 세계의 경계를 모호하게 만들어 관객으로 하여금 다양한 해석의 여지를 제공합니다.

"어디에서든"이라는 전시 제목처럼, 김미애 작가의 작품은 다양한 풍경과 장소를 통해 우리가 어디에 있든 자신의 뿌리를 찾고 정체성을 확립해 나가는 과정을 보여줍니다. 때로는 울창한 숲속의 풍경으로, 때로는 포루투칼의 마데이라 섬의 모습으로, 또 때로는 도시와 자연이 공존하는 풍경으로 이러한 주제를 탐구합니다.

이번 전시를 통해 관람객들은 작가의 독특한 시각으로 재해석된 풍경 속에서 자연의 아름다움과 생명력을 느끼는 동시에, 자신만의 이야기를 발견할 수 있을 것입니다.

Artist Statement

Perhaps when I began painting in Germany, it was a means to settle in a foreign place. I believed that over time, this practice would gradually alleviate the sense of alienation and unfamiliarity I felt in this strange environment.

Much time has passed since then. Working and exhibiting between Berlin and Seoul, I now realize that the alienation and unfamiliarity I experienced were not solely due to the spaces I inhabited.

The trees, houses, and birds that appear in my paintings—

Trees deeply rooted in the ground, well-established houses, and free birds are never strange, but familiar anywhere.

그림 작업을 시작하게 된 독일에서는 계속 그림을 그리는 일은 낯선 곳에서 정착하기 위한 어쩌면 한 수단이었을지도 모르겠다.

그리고 나는, 이 일이 낯선 곳에서 내가 느끼는 소외감, 이질감을 시간이 더해지면서 조금씩 덜어 주리라 믿었다.

그 이후로 많은 시간이 지났고,

베를린 서울을 오가며 작업하고 전시를 하면서, 내가 가졌던 그 소외감, 이질감이 결코 내가 속했던 그 공간때문만은 아니라는 것을 이제는 깨닫는다.

내 그림들에 나타나는 나무들, 집들, 그리고 새들 

땅에 깊이 뿌리 내린 나무들, 잘 자리 잡은 집들 그리고 자유로운 새들은 어디에서든 낯설지 않고, 어디에서든 친숙하다.
