Welcoming the spring season, Gallery Dam presents Jang Hyun-joo's 14th exhibition, titled "The Time When Darkness Becomes Flowers". An artist who has been working on the theme of seeds for some time, she now reveals how seeds, having waited patiently in the dark earth, sprout and bloom with the arrival of spring.

All of her works are titled "Seed". Just as the forms of seeds from various plants are diverse, the seeds in her artworks appear in shapes of acorns and chestnuts. Upon closer examination, some seeds even resemble the candies once placed on ancestral ritual tables - those sweet, colorful forms that once captivated our gaze.

Having grown up in a rural childhood landscape intertwined with grass and nature, seeds and plants have become crucial elements in the artist's work.

Jang Hyun-joo, who majored in Western painting at Ewha Womans University, employs a unique technique of coloring on traditional Korean paper using powdered pigments typically associated with Eastern painting, rather than Western painting materials. Her work reveals a powerful "concentration" that reflects her passionate artistic attitude, a result of dedicated time and effort.

This exhibition will feature approximately 18 of the artist's newest works.

봄을 맞이하여 갤러리 담에서는 장현주의 14번째 <어둠이 꽃이 되는 시간>을 마련하였다. 한동안 씨앗을 주제로 작업을 해 온 작가가 어두운 땅 속에서 때를 기다려 봄이 되자 싹을 틔우고 이어 꽃도 내보이고 있다.

작품 제목은 모두 씨앗이다. 온갖 식물의 씨앗의 형태가 다양하듯이 작가의 작품에 등장하는 씨앗도 도토리, 알밤의 형태이 보이지만, 자세히 보면 어떤 작품에 등장하는 씨앗은 예전 제사상에 올려놓던 사탕의 모습도 보인다. 달콤하고 색색의 모습이 우리의 눈을 떼지 못하게 만들었던 황홀했던 그 모습이다.

작가는 유년기의 시골에서의 풀과 자연이 어우러진 곳에서 자라서 작가의 씨앗과 풀 등이 작업의 중요 요소로 등장하고 있는 것이다.

이화여자대학교에서 서양화를 전공한 장현주는 서양화의 재료가 아닌 동양화의 분채를 장지 위에 채색하는 방법을 쓴다. 시간과 노력의 결과물로써 작가의 작품에 대한 열의를 엿보게 하는 정용하는 <집중의 힘>이 작가의 태도임을 엿볼 수 있다.

이번 전시에는 작가의 신작 18여점이 출품될 예정이다.

집중의 힘 / 정용화

알고 보면, 꽃은 계절이 불러 모은 허공이다. 지상을 향한 땅의 집중이다. 

흩어지는 것이 거부의 형식이라면 피워내는 것은 모서리를 견뎌낸 침묵의 힘이다. 

폭우가 쏟아지고 바람이 세차게 부는 날이면 나무는 땅 속을 움켜쥐고 있는 뿌리에 집중한다. 

상처가 있던 자리마다 꽃이 피어난다. 꽃은 어둠 속에서 별이 떨어뜨린 혁명이다. 

꽃으로 피어 있는 시간, 나뭇가지에 앉아 있던 새들이 하늘로 날아오를 때 날개에 집중한다. 

나무는 얼마나 많은 새들의 울음을 간직하고 있을까, 온 몸이 귀가 되어 집중할 때 그 소리를 들을 수 있다. 

때로는 어긋난 대답처럼 꽃 진자리마다 잎새 뒤에 숨어서 가을은 열매에 집중한다. 

알고 보면, 열매는 화려한 기억들을 끌어 모아 가을을 짧게 요약한다.

 

세상에서 집중없이 피어난 꽃은 없다고

너는 우주의 집중으로 피워낸 꽃이다.

Artist Statement

Spring always comes back, bringing with it a bounty of blossoms. 

Where flowers have fallen, new buds sprout and bloom. These fresh shoots emerge from dry branches. 

In February, as winter transitions to spring, I enjoy caring for bulb plants like daffodils and hyacinths. 

Observing the tiny pointed shoots between the stems of the bulbs, I think they resemble embers ready to bloom. 

I imagine that these embers will chase away the cold of February, allowing things that are shrunken and stiff to gradually loosen and bloom.

If you patiently wait, concentrate, and observe, you can see the color, shape, and fragrance of the flower. 

Only when every plant or form of life breaks through, they can grow freely. 

In a tranquil time without light, they create embers and dream of germination by focusing all their strength. 

Darkness serves as a secret chamber for self-reflection and patience in preparation for rebirth. Though it’s said sprouts need the sun, this is the reason why sprouts germinate and flowers bloom in the dark. 

봄은 언제나 돌아와 여기 저기 꽃을 피운다. 꽃이 진 자리에는 다시 움이 트고 꽃이 피고, 물기없는 마른 가지에 새로운 싹도 올라 온다.

나는 봄과 겨울 사이 2월이면 수선화, 히야신스 등 알뿌리 식물을 사서 즐기는 것을 좋아한다.

알뿌리의 줄기와 줄기 사이에 작게 뾰족이 나와있는 것을 보고 있으면 마치 ‘꽃을 피울 불씨 같다.‘는 생각을 한다.

’2월의 한기를 이 불씨가 몰아가겠구나,,,, 움츠리고, 위축되고, 굳어 있던 것들이 조금씩 풀어지고 피어나겠구나 ’ 한다.

조금은 지루하게, 기다리고 집중하고 보고 있으면 꽃의 빛깔이, 형태가, 향기가 보인다.

어떤 식물이든, 어떤 생명이든

뚫고 나와야만 맘껏 자라날 자유가 있고, 뚫고 나와야만 성장할 수 있다.

빛이 없는 고요한 시간 속에서 불씨를 만들고, 온 힘을 집중해 발아를 꿈꾸고.

어둠은 거듭나기를 향한 자기 성찰과 인내의 밀실이다.

해가 있어야 싹이 튼다고 하지만,

어둠 속에서 싹이 트고 꽃이 피어나는 이유이다.
