About

The seventh solo exhibition of Arai Kei, a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, will be held at Gallery Dam in Korea. This exhibition, themed *Chochungdo* (草蟲圖), features paintings of poppies, butterflies, and bees. *Chochungdo* refers to traditional East Asian artwork depicting flowers, plants, and insects, symbolizing harmony in nature. Famous examples include Shin Saimdang's works from the Joseon Dynasty.

Arai Kei uses traditional Japanese paper with *sekkae* (mineral pigments) and *bunchae* (powder pigments) to create a three-dimensional effect. The poppy petals are painted using a wet-on-wet technique with *bunchae*, while stems and leaves are rendered with *sekkae*. Watercolors are used for insects, resulting in vibrant depictions of poppies and insects coexisting harmoniously.

This exhibition includes a large-scale piece (size 500 ho) alongside other works featuring poppies, bees, and butterflies. Through these artworks, the artist conveys a wish for peace and well-being in families and society.

Arai Kei actively exhibits both in Japan and internationally while teaching at Tokyo University of the Arts.

일본 동경예술대학에 있는 아라이 케이의 한국에서의 일곱 번째 개인전이 갤러리 담에서 열린다. 봄날을 보내면서 아쉬움을 가지고 이번에 초충도라는 주제로 양귀비와 나비, 벌등이 그려진 그림을 주제로 선보이고 있다. 초충도(草蟲圖)라 함은 꽃, 풀과 벌레를 주제로 그려진 그림이라고 하는데 조선시대 신사임당의 수박과 들쥐가 나오는 초충도로도 유명하다. 가지, 맨드라미, 소국을 비롯하여 개구리, 메뚜기, 벌, 나비, 쥐등이 등장하기도 한다. 자연의 모습을 보여주는 초충도에서는 꽃과 벌레, 곤충등이 모두 상생하여 잘 사는 모습을 반영한 것이라고 볼 수 있다.

작가는 일본 전통 종이에 석채와 분채로 작업하고 있어서 입체감을 보여주고 있다. 양귀비 꽃잎은 분채로 번짐기법을 사용하였고, 잎과 줄기는 석채, 곤충들은 수채화물감을 사용하여 다채로운 양귀비꽃과 곤충이 어울어진 초충도를 그려내고 있다.  이번 전시에서는 500호의 대작과 함께 다양한 양귀비와 벌과 나비들을 감상하면서 자연의 아름다움과 함께 가정과 사회의 안녕을 바라는 작가의 마음을 느낄 수 있을 것이다.

아라이 케이 작가는 현재 동경예술대학에서 교수로 재직 중이며 일본 국내외에서 활발한 활동을 하고 있다.

Artist Statement

Since ancient times, in the East, *Chochungdo* (Grass and Insects Painting) has been created as a *gilsangdo* (auspicious painting) embodying the wish for happiness. Particularly, *Chochungdo* was a beloved artistic theme during the Joseon Dynasty.

This exhibition introduces new works from the *Modern Chochungdo* series, which I have been painting since 2019, including my first large-scale piece in this series.

The artwork depicts a lush meadow filled with blooming poppies, where various insects gather and roam freely, portraying the abundance of nature.

Through this exhibition of *Chochungdo*, I hope to extend my wishes for peace and well-being today.

예로부터 동양에서는 행복을 염원하는 마음을 담아 길상도（吉祥圖）인 초충도를 그려왔습니다. 특히, 초충도는 조선시대에 많은 사랑을 받은 화제（畫題）이기도 합니다.

이번 전시에서는 2019년부터 그려온 〈현대 초충도〉중에서도 처음으로 큰 화면에 그린 작품과 함께 동 시리즈의 신작을 소개합니다.

 활짝 핀 양귀비가 흐드러진 풀숲, 그 풀숲으로 모여들어 유유히 노니는 다양한 곤충들의 모습으로 자연의 풍양(豊穣)을 그려낸 작품입니다.

이 전시회에 선보이는 〈초충도〉를 통해 오늘의 안녕을 기원합니다.
