Gallery Dam presents "I'll Remember. And..." by artist Song Ji-eun this July. The exhibition expresses the artist's desire to reconnect with departed family members through artistic remembrance.

Using traditional materials of yellow ocher, gold, and mineral pigments, Song creates luminous pathways for the departed, adorned with peonies, chrysanthemums, and dandelions. These floral motifs reflect Korean funeral traditions while creating a beautiful visual journey between worlds.

Song Ji-eun majored in Oriental Painting at Dongduk Women's University and later completed both master's and doctoral degrees in Conservation and Restoration at Tokyo University of the Arts. This marks her ninth solo exhibition.

In her distinctive technique, Song layers yellow ocher mixed with animal glue on plywood, then embellishes with mineral pigments and gold to render familial separation with delicate beauty and profound emotion.

갤러리 담에서는 7월에 송지은 작가의 “기억할께, 그리고……”라는 제목으로 전시를 기획하였다. 같이 살다가 먼저 떠나간 가족들은 가끔씩 우리 곁에 가족을 향한 그리움으로 소환하고 싶은 마음을 작가는 이번 전시에 황토와 금, 석채등을 써서 그 분들이 가시는 길을 화려하고 아름답게 모란꽃과 국화꽃, 때로는 민들레 꽃등으로 장식하고 있다.  송지은은 동덕여대에서 동양화를 전공하였으며, 졸업후 동경예술대학에서 보존수복 석박사과정을 졸업했다.

Artist Statement 

When a loved one departs, longing and sorrow always remain. However, as time passes and the grief becomes somewhat more bearable, happy memories and moments shared together begin to fill that space. While traveling through these memories with the deceased, I always arrive at the same question at the end: "So, are you living well? Are you happy there?"

This leads me to embark on another journey of memories with the departed, and once again, the thoughts repeat like a refrain: "So, is it nice there? Are you living well? Are you happy there?"

Perhaps wishing for them to find happiness in the afterlife that they could not fully experience in this world is the love and mourning that we, who remain in this world, can offer to the departed.

These days, chrysanthemums are commonly offered at funerals, but in the past, peony folding screens were often placed around the funeral setting. In important moments of life and death during the Joseon Dynasty, peonies invariably appeared. Symbolizing abundance and nobility—a life lived in prosperity and honor—peonies express the wish that the deceased may enjoy wealth and honor in the afterlife as well.

This exhibition, "I'll Remember. And...", contains a commemorative heart for the deceased. Imagining them in a field full of blooming peonies, along with the figurines that connect this world and the afterlife, I pray for their happiness. With the hope that they will enjoy abundance and honor in the afterlife, as symbolized by peonies, I wish these feelings would reach them. Today, too, I remember the departed while tracing our memories and writing down, word by word, heartfelt messages I couldn't express before.

사랑하는 사람이 떠나고 난 자리엔 항상 그리움과 슬픔이 남는다. 하지만 시간이 흘러 그 슬픔이 조금은 무덤덤해질 즈음, 그 자리엔 함께했던 행복한 시간들, 추억이 그 자리를 비집고 들어온다. 고인과 함께했던 추억의 시간여행을 하다보면 항상 그 끝자락엔 ‘그래서, 잘 살고 있지? 거기선 행복해?’ 

라는 마음에 다다르게 된다. 그래서 또 다시 고인과의 추억여행을 하게 되고 그러다 보면 ‘그래서, 거긴 좋아? 잘 살고 있지? 거기선 행복하지?’ 라는 마음이 도돌이표처럼 반복된다.

저승에서라도 이승에서 못 다한 행복을 누리라는 마음, 그 마음이 적어도 이승에 남은 우리들이 할 수 있는 고인에 대한 사랑, 애도는 아닐까?

요즘은 장례 때 국화를 많이 헌화하지만, 과거에는 장례식 때 모란병풍을 많이 둘렀다. 조선시대 삶과 죽음의 중요한 장면에 모란은 어김없이 등장한다. 풍요로움을 누리고 귀한 대접을 받으며 산다는 부귀영화의 뜻을 담고 있는 모란은 망자가 저승에서도 부귀영화를 누리라는 마음이 담겨있다.

이번 전시 < “기억할게. 그리고… ” > 는 고인에 대한 추모의 마음이 담겨있는 전시다. 이승과 저승을 연결해 주는 꼭두들과 함께 모란꽃이 가득 핀 꽃밭에서의 모습을 상상하며 고인의 행복을 기원하다. 모란꽃의 의미처럼 저승에서라도 풍요로움과 귀한 대접을 누리며 살았으면 하는 마음, 그 마음이 꼭 고인에게 닿기를 바라면서, 고인과의 추억을 더듬으며 그동안 못했던 마음의 말들을 한자 한자 꾹꾹 써 내려간 편지와 함께 오늘도 고인을 기억한다.
