About

"Women’s days are woven from the time of old, repetitive, and invisible labor acquired through the body. They are times built layer upon layer with labor, care, waiting, and sacrifice for someone else. These are the days I hold in reverent awe." — From the Artist’s Statement

Gallery Dam, which has been introducing the profound flow of contemporary art in Yunbosun-gil, Anguk-dong, presents Our Days, a solo exhibition featuring new works by artist Ryu Junhwa this summer.

Ryu Junhwa’s paintings have always boldly summoned the presence of women—who have long been hidden in the shadows of history—onto the canvas. In this exhibition, the artist’s gaze moves beyond grand narratives to touch upon the "ordinary days" of women—days that persist as if seeping into daily life, repeating submission and resistance. Nearly a century after Virginia Woolf published A Room of One's Own, this exhibition stands as a heartfelt homage to all the women who are still sprinting every day for their own complete space and independence.

On her canvases appear vibrant vases set upon black tables, blue tulips positioned against the rugged ridges of Annapurna, sinks where daily chores take place, and late-night studio scenes. For Ryu Junhwa, the act of "setting a table and offering flowers for someone" serves as a painterly ritual—one meant to capture moments of nameless, fading lives and to extend a profound welcome to existence and living beings.

The highlights of this exhibition are undeniably her large-scale works, such as Flag March and A Day. Iconography—such as women silently marching forward holding white flags beneath magnificently blooming white hydrangeas, or figures quietly rowing a boat under a yellow altar shimmering with the fragrance of flowers—captures our daily life with a surreal yet warm gaze, echoing Philip Larkin’s poetic verse that describes days as "where we live: past, present, and future together." The rich, solid matière (texture) that the artist builds up layer by layer with acrylics on canvas faithfully embodies the weight of time and the invisible labor of women who have silently sustained the world.

We cordially invite you to experience this radiant exhibition of Our Days presented by Ryu Junhwa at Gallery Dam. Approximately 20 new works will be unveiled in this exhibition.

Artist Statement

Mrs. Dalloway goes out to buy the flowers herself to prepare for the party. Buying flowers, watering them, cooking food, meeting people to ask how they are—thus one day passes, and another day follows.

Our lives consist mostly of a continuation of ordinary days. Every day we conform, every day we resist; every moment we choose life, and every moment we cross the boundary between the past and the future. A day that has passed does not disappear; it stacks layer upon layer atop today. These days that seep into one another and continue onward—we call them "our days."

In particular, women’s days are times woven from old, repetitive, and invisible labor acquired through the body. They are times built layer upon layer with labor, care, waiting, and sacrifice for someone else. These are the days I hold in reverent awe.

For this exhibition, I have prepared an altar for the lives and time of women who have lived through today. The act and form of setting a table for someone is a welcome and a homage to existences and living beings. To hold onto the moments of life that fade away without a name and without a legend, I go out to buy flowers today for all those women who have fought so fiercely. Flowers symbolize the beauty of life, the continuity of cyclical time, and the value of radiant moments. And today, I offer flowers upon my altar once again.

Today, nearly 100 years after Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One's Own was published in 1929, we are still sprinting day by day to secure a room of our own and 500 pounds a year.

Days are where we live* A place where the past, present, and future live together.

*From Philip Larkin's poem "Days"

"Days" — Philip Larkin

What are days for?
Days are where we live.
They come, they wake us
Time and time over.
They are to be happy in:
Where can we live but days?
Ah, solving that question
Brings the priest and the doctor
In their long coats
Running over the fields.
