Gallery Dam is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Japanese contemporary artist Koji Misawa from March 17 to 29. Born in Shimane Prefecture in 1962, Misawa has dedicated over 30 years to visualizing the layers of time and the flow of change through the medium of painting. This exhibition features new paintings and sculptural works that render "invisible time" tangible through meticulously layered pigments born from the artist's fundamental hand movements.

Paintings as Geological Strata of Time

Misawa's creative process invariably begins with the movement of the hand. Forms and colors gradually emerge through the repetitive act of layering paint on canvas, a process from which the artist draws his primary inspiration. "Life is change, and the time common to all things flows and overlaps without ceasing," says Misawa, expressing his passion for capturing these ephemeral qualities visually.

His paintings are characterized by abstract compositions where turquoise, magenta, and dark brown intersect. The traces of coarse brushstrokes overlap horizontally, revealing the accumulation of time much like geological strata. As the layers build, the interplay between transparency and opacity, light and shadow, creates a profound sense of depth. This is not merely a combination of colors, but an allusion to the layers of memory and experience accumulated over time.

Expanding Materiality into Three-Dimensional Space

A highlight of this exhibition is the collection of sculptural works presented alongside his paintings. The Monolith and Pile of Thoughts series, which combine wood, non-woven fabric, and acrylic, expand the "aesthetic of layers" into three-dimensional space. The Monolith series, in particular, creates a striking visual effect as if the painted layers have been architecturally constructed into a massive rectangular volume.

The surfaces of these sculptural pieces are treated with the same multi-layered painting technique as his canvases. As viewers move around these objects, they experience painting not as something confined to a flat plane, but as an entity that extends into space. The layered surfaces shift in appearance depending on the angle of light, revealing the nature of matter as it transforms within the flow of time.

An Artistic Journey of Over 30 Years

Since his first solo exhibitions in 1987 at Ban Gallery (Osaka) and Gallery Tsubaki GT2 (Tokyo), Koji Misawa has consistently showcased his work across Japan, Korea, and China. His connection with the Korean art scene deepened with the 2019 Korea-Japan contemporary art exchange exhibition Recollection/Vision at the Kim Bo-seong Art Center in Seoul, followed by his first solo exhibition in Korea at Gallery Dam in 2024.

Starting from the most primitive act—the "movement of the hand"—Misawa explores universal themes of time, change, accumulation, and disappearance. Eschewing specific narratives or representation, his work reveals the essence of time solely through pure layers of pigment and the traces of the brush. In doing so, he presents a compelling path forward for contemporary abstract painting.

 

갤러리 담은 오는 3월 17일부터 29일까지 일본 현대미술 작가 고지 미사와(Koji Misawa)의 개인전을 개최한다. 1962년 시마네현에서 태어난 작가는 30년 이상 회화를 통해 시간의 흐름과 변화의 층위를 시각화하는 작업을 지속해왔다. 이번 전시에서는 손의 움직임에서 시작되어 겹겹이 쌓인 물감의 층을 통해 '보이지 않는 시간'을 가시화한 신작 회화와 입체 작품을 선보인다.


시간의 지층을 쌓아올리는 회화

미사와의 작품은 언제나 손의 움직임에서 시작된다. 캔버스 위에 물감을 겹겹이 칠하는 반복적 행위를 통해 형태와 색이 점차 드러나고, 그 과정에서 작가는 영감을 받는다. 작가는 "삶은 변화이며, 만물에 공통된 시간 또한 멈추지 않고 계속 흐르고 겹쳐집니다"라고 말하며, 이러한 보이지 않는 것들을 시각적으로 표현하는 것에 대한 열정을 드러낸다.

그의 회화는 청록색과 자주색, 흑갈색이 교차하며 만들어내는 추상적 화면이 특징이다. 거친 붓질의 흔적이 수평으로 겹쳐지면서 마치 지질학적 지층처럼 시간의 축적을 보여준다. 물감층이 겹쳐질수록 투명과 불투명, 밝음과 어둠이 교차하며 깊이감을 만들어낸다. 이는 단순히 색채의 조합이 아니라, 시간이 흐르며 축적된 기억과 경험의 층위를 암시한다.


회화의 물성을 입체로 확장하다

이번 전시에서 주목할 점은 회화 작업과 병행하여 선보이는 입체 작품들이다. 목재, 부직포, 아크릴을 결합한 모노리스(Monolith)와 파일 오브 쏘츠(Pile of thoughts) 시리즈는 회화에서 다루던 '층의 미학'을 3차원 공간으로 확장한다. 특히 모노리스는 거대한 직육면체 형태로 회화의 물감층을 마치 건축물처럼 쌓아올린 듯한 시각적 효과를 자아낸다.

입체 작품의 표면 역시 회화와 동일한 방식으로 물감이 겹겹이 칠해져 있다. 관람객은 이 작품을 둘러보며 회화가 평면에 갇혀 있지 않고 공간으로 뻗어 나올 수 있음을 경험하게 된다. 층이 쌓인 표면은 빛의 각도에 따라 다르게 보이며, 시간의 흐름 속에서 변화하는 물질의 본성을 드러낸다.

30년 넘게 이어온 예술적 여정


미사와 코지는 1987년 오사카 Ban Gallery와 도쿄 Gallery Tsubaki GT2에서 첫 개인전을 연 이후, 일본과 한국, 중국에서 꾸준히 작품을 발표해왔다. 2019년 서울 금보성예술센터에서 열린 한일 현대미술 교류전 '회상/비전'을 시작으로 한국과의 인연을 이어왔으며, 2024년 우리나라에서는 갤러리 담에서 첫 개인전을 개최한 바 있다.

작가는 "손의 움직임"이라는 가장 원초적인 행위로부터 출발하여, 시간과 변화, 축적과 소멸이라는 보편적 주제를 다룬다. 그의 작품은 특정 서사나 재현을 거부하고, 순수한 물감의 층위와 붓질의 흔적만으로 시간의 본질을 드러낸다. 이는 동시대 추상회화가 나아갈 수 있는 하나의 길을 제시한다.

제 작품은 언제나 손의 움직임에서 시작됩니다. 점차 형태와 색이 드러나고, 제가 원하는 대로 물감을 겹겹이 칠하다 보면 영감이 샘솟기 시작합니다.

삶은 변화이며, 만물에 공통된 시간 또한 멈추지 않고 계속 흐르고 겹쳐집니다.

저는 이러한 보이지 않는 것들을 시각적으로 표현하는 데 열정적입니다.
